O’KEEFFE WELCOMES DEIS ANNOUNCMENT

Senator Susan O’Keeffe has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn TD in relation to DEIS schools.

“I am delighted that Minister Quinn has reviewed the decision on the staffing schedule for DEIS schools, the result of which is no DEIS school in Sligo will lose a teacher.”

“I was glad to have the opportunity to engage with the schools that could have been affected. I listened to the teachers, parents and students of the schools and was able to relay their message to Minister Quinn. And their message was clear; that the teaching programmes in DEIS schools are having results, that young children are learning.”

“I thank Minister Quinn for listening to me and my Labour Party colleagues and for listening to the deeply-held concerns of the parents and teachers in Sligo and across the country.”

“I know this announcement will be welcome news to teachers and parents, and it will allow the teachers in the DEIS schools to continue their great work this year and in the years ahead.”
